She is a member of the Earth Commission (https://earthcommission.org/), whose mission it is to assess the latest science to underpin the development of science-based targets for climate, land, water and biodiversity. Her research focuses on tipping elements in the Earth System, Greenland and Antarctic ice dynamics and future sea-level rise. Winkelmann is co-developer of the open-source Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM, https://pism-docs.org) and participated in two research expeditions to Antarctica.
